African American Hair Styles

Wanting one of the many new African American hair styles every few weeks is not fickle; it is merely evidence of being multidimensional. Summer is here and with it come all sorts of fun outdoor things to do.  It is also that time of year when we encounter the highest percentage of damaged hair, some of it beyond repair.

There are more African American hair styles than you can possibly imagine and creativity in hair abounds in the African American community. This is because of the versatility of the hair which most African Americans have. African American hair styles can run such a wide range because African American hair is naturally “nappy,” that is, it is in very tight, crinkly curls.

This allows it to keep its shape for many more vertical styles. In addition to that, African American hair styles can take on the appearance of the hair styles of any other race, because Blacks can straighten their hair, or put in hair weaves.

That means that, not only are such styles as flat tops and Afros available, but in addition, African American hair styles can be completely straight, curly, wavy, or anything in between.

Many African American hair styles involve extensive braiding of the hair, and there are a large number of different ways in which this can be done. Often, the hair is put in many, very small braids which are stretched tightly across the head.

Another popular African American hair style involves tiny braids with beads at the end of them that hang all over the head. They are not wild, untamed braids placed here and there erratically, but rather very tight and very regular. You can see in pictures of African American hair styles exactly what this looks like. It looks absolutely awesome, but by God it must hurt to have it done to you.

The afro is my favorite of all African American hair styles. I know that at this point it is somewhat dated, but the look of that big, bulbous cloud of cool ascending from the head of a young man was like nothing else. It made hip in its day, and I would enjoy seeing it making resurgence.

There are many other African American hair styles that I like; I still simply can not see one which compares at all to the afro. Not being African American, or caring about hair styles, be they hair styles for African Americans, Whites, Hispanics, or any other race, I  can't say I will lose much sleep over it. My own hair is quickly thinning, so my favorite hairstyle is simply to shave my head. That is about the coolest thing that you can do if you are missing a lot of your hair.
