Leather Craft Projects For The Beginner

Preparing For a Leather Craft Project

When you've chosen your leather craft you'll have to have an appointed area and correct supplies in order to work efficiently and well. Making preparations ahead of time makes what you are doing a lot more enjoyable.

Trimming the Edges:

To trim the leather craft project's edges, lay it on a flat work space. Make certain that the leather is moist, and keep it that way by spraying it with water.

Next you'll need what's called an edge beveling tool to flatten the raw cut edges. The 2 prongs that make the shape of a V should be placed so that they're facing upward on both sides of the leather's edge.

Steadying the beveling tool at around a 45 degree angle with your finger positioned on top of the tool, then push it away from you while working down the edge, holding the leather design rigidly in your other hand.

As you work, small leather strips are going ro come off. It is a great idea to practice on extra pieces of leather prior to using the leather beveler on your official project, so that you're more comfortable.

Tools to Use:

When you work with leather crafts, look into the fundamentals: a retractable knife with a break-off blade, an awl and spare point, an X-acto knife and a rotary punch.

Furthermore, you'll have to have needles, a pair of strong scissors, some waxed linen thread, beeswax, and a pair of pliers to pull the needle through the leather.

Then there are slickers and bevellers that will smooth out the edges, a drive punch for making bigger holes and thong cutters for lace making. A yardstick and folding rule are necessities to assure that the leather project is correctly measured.

The Cutting Surface:

No matter the project, it's essential to cut your leather piece. Opt for an even surface protected by a rubber mat. The mat should protect your tools and stop them from becoming dull or blunt. If you want to try a different technique, you can buy a self-healing cutting board. Cuts made in boards such as these, seal up automatically. This device is readily available to buy at art or office supply stores.

Marking the Cut:

Use a pencil and a yardstick or straight edge to draw the cut on your leather pattern. Simply score lightly with the pencil. An unsharpened edge should be helpful if you're trying to cut a curved line. Use the tip of an X-acto knife on a metal edge and cut along the line making certain the knife is kept against the edge.

Review:

If you are a novice with leather crafts, you may not want to spend too much money on crafting tools. Once you have practiced and worked with a basic set and finished a few crafts, you'll have a better concept of what tools and supplies you are most likely to use.

Finally, a little research and making comparisons can lead you to buying a greater quality leather tool if you need it. Undoubtedly, even the costliest tools won't help if you don't permit yourself the time to perfect and develop your skill in leather crafting.

If you do your best with what you have, it will not matter if you can't purchase really expensive leather craft awl or the very best knife. The quality of your work will show through once you've got the basics down.

Ordinarily, you can locate a leather art supply shop in your area when you search through the yellow pages. Many larger centers have a Tandy leather craft shop in the vicinity.
